Signs your AC is the wrong size (too big or too small)

Short cycling, sticky air, or a house that never cools down? Here's how to tell whether size is the problem.

Short Answer

Too big and too small cause different problems

An AC that's too big cools the air fast, then shuts off before it's had a chance to dry it. The house ends up cold and clammy. One that's too small runs all afternoon and still can't hit the temperature you set.

Either way, you pay. Below are the signs of each, along with the handful of things worth checking before you decide the equipment itself is the wrong size and start pricing a replacement.

Too Big

Signs your AC is oversized

Too Small

Signs your AC is undersized

One caveat. On the very hottest days of the year, even a correctly sized system should run for long stretches. Load calculations are built around a design temperature for your area, so long run times in a record heat wave don't prove anything by themselves.

Check First

Rule these out before blaming the size

A maintenance or airflow problem can look a lot like a sizing problem, and the basic checks are ones you can do yourself without any special tools. ENERGY STAR's fact sheet points out that an oversized unit's big output can mask dirty filters, leaky ducts and the wrong refrigerant charge, so those are worth checking either way. Start with the easy stuff:

  1. Swap the filter if it's dirty. A clogged one chokes airflow and can make a healthy system look weak.
  2. Check the thermostat's settings and batteries, and where it's mounted. Next to a sunny window, a lamp or a supply vent, it'll misread the room.
  3. Make sure vents and returns are open and not buried behind furniture or rugs.
  4. Clear the outdoor unit.
  5. Look for crushed or disconnected ducts anywhere you can reach them: attic, basement, crawl space.
  6. Leave low refrigerant and dirty coils to a licensed tech. Refrigerant work requires EPA certification.

Next Steps

What to do if the size really is wrong

Get a real number first. Ask a contractor to run an ACCA Manual J on your house before you spend anything.

If it turns out to be oversized, a dehumidifier helps with the clamminess in the meantime. On some systems a technician can also slow the blower down so it pulls out more moisture. When it's time to replace the equipment, size it to the load. A variable-speed or inverter system is worth a look too, since it can throttle down instead of shutting off.

Undersized? Shrink the load before you spend. Sealing air leaks, adding attic insulation and shading west-facing windows can sometimes close the gap on their own. And if it's really just one room, a separate unit for that room is worth pricing against replacing the whole system.

FAQ

Common questions

How long should an air conditioner run per cycle?

There's no single right number, but cycles of just a few minutes are a red flag. ENERGY STAR says units reach peak efficiency after about 10 minutes of running.

Can an oversized AC cause high humidity?

Yes. If it shuts off before moisture has time to condense on the coil and drain away, the air stays damp even though it feels cool.

Is it normal for my AC to run all day in a heat wave?

Often, yes. Systems are sized to a design temperature for your area, not the record high, so on unusually hot days you should expect long run times. Worry if the house can't hold temperature on ordinary summer days.

Can I fix an oversized AC without replacing it?

You can ease the symptoms with a dehumidifier, or have a technician adjust the blower speed. The real fix is a correctly sized system when you replace it.
